'J'nis is Canon Car.negie'.s best-known book, althougli lie has several others to his credit. Prior to his present appointment, Canon Carnegie was rector cf the Ai.JVs chinch, St. Margaret's, where three years ago he succeeded Canon lleiisley Hem-on, now Dean of Durham. Before that, Canon Carnegie was rector of the cathedral church of St. Philip, Birmingham, where he succeeded another well-known divine, Dr. Knox, who is now Bishop of Manchester. The new House of Commons chaplain is a Scotsman, born in 1 rein ml fifty-six years ago, and after a brilliant university career spent two years travelling round the world, partly with his friend the Earl otLDndley. -As a curate lie worked, for sonic time in the East End of London, and will always be remembered in Birmingham tor the splendid educational w6rk lie accomplished among the poor children of tho Midland city. Canon Carnegie's parliamentary duties will not be burdensome. His most .import-ant duty is to read, to an average attendance of between twenty and forty members, three brief prayers with which each daily sitting in tho House begins. The office of Speaker's Chaplain dates from lGof when the first regular chaplain was appointed by Richard Before that date the litany was said daily by the Clerk and answered by the whole House upon their knees.
