Mackenzie, da.ted oth August last, ho says that in February he was offered i permanent captaincy by the British War Office: and'he decided to take it. Tie now is attached 'to the 18th Battalion of thq Hood Battle Division, and lie writes that he is "very much ;n love with the life out here, and do not mind, In.-in a selfish point of view, how long the war lasts." I have a who'.e section of the defence, with a thousand men, ten Maxim guns, trench mortars, mul four batteries of guns under my command ; it is all like a dream. I have a telephone just by my pillow, and r.vn buzz up my guns or trench mortars at a minute's notice and give the Huns a taste of their future whenever I wish, and I can tell you I do it regularly." Councillor Herrick informed the borough council at its meeting last evening that it was bis intention to retire from the council next April—the time of the biennial elections.
