A private letter received in Otaki contains the following item of special infceiest to local residents: -"Scrgt. St. Legcr (hu Jmnd of Mm «St. Legcr, of the llailway Hotel. Otaki) has been mentioned in despatches for trying to rescue a French woman, who was wounded dining an enemy bombardment. Scrgt. St. Legcr wis carrying the woman to a place of safety when she was killed by a piece of shell. The gallant New Zcalaiuler, however, escaped unlinrt. Doubtless he will be awarded a -French medial for his bra"verly." Sister Bennett (late of Manakau). who ivag nursing sick and, wounded soldiers -at Kgvpt .for .some months and afterwards went to England, is now. in nil jKobnlrlity, nursing at the front in France. Private advices just received ntate that at time of writing she expected to be leaving for Franco immediately, having been called out for service there. The. usual monthly meeting of tho Otaki State .School Committee wt.is held on Monday night, when there was a full attendance. Tt was reported that tin? school attendance had been about tho (average, which waft considered very natfofactory, considering the amount of sickness prevailing. It was reported that no -permanent teacher had been njipoiiited. An nnonvmous friend had donated for use at the school an up-to-date pencil sharpener a most nc-ee-'tnhlr present For school use.
No less than fourteen nominations have been received for the Otaki Town D-iard chetio'i. The nominations closed at noon to-dny, anil the election takes place on Wednesday next. The names of the candidates are duly advertised elm-whore. It will he sen that all the old members—with the exception of Mr J. S. Pole—arc seeking re-electipn, while the new candidates la re Messrs H. H. Oliver, C. .H. Williams, C. Kilshy Herbert Mead', Geo. Noble, C. G. Briimloy, W. T\ T?<],wards, P. H. Taipua Mr Mnckie was approached, but declined nomination.

A geneitil meeting of members of the Otaki Patriotic Society is to meet this week to consider a proposal to establish n District Patriotic Fund.
A young people's plain and fancy dress ball held, at Otaki in in id of the Red Cross Society was a pronounced success.
Mr. E. Hopkins. . the well-known breeder of whiteleghorn fowls. has at prcKiHit some 1400 chickens, all Appearing in n high-class, healthy condition. On his farm at Rangiuru are nearly two thousand hens of the bent laying strains procurable, which number will ho considerably increased at no distant date. Everything a* usual is spick and span, andi n visit to the farm is most interesting.
