Chronicle Note.—The Jate editor .of The Evening Post had the quality of. evoking for himself the sincere admirntion and respect of all with whom ho came in contact. Fiir.m iin manner •whenever occasion demanded, he yet hud a gentleness of heart that was always apparent to all his intimates and which endeared him to an admiring circlo of friends throughout Australia. Me wa® born at La uncos ton, Tasmania, November 21, 1840; studied engineering:; entered the Queensland! Civil Service in 1866; became Chief Clerk Crown Lands Department; in 1871 was appointed nhu'eiF clerk do the Supreme Court; resigned from Civil Service to edit the Bi.wltfine Courier and the Queonslander, which in 1873 became his property. He wr.s executive commissioner for Queensland at the Sydney International Exhibition in 1879, and then took up his residence in Sydney. He came -to New Zealand in the early 'nineties, 'and worked in the Parliamentary paoss gallery as representative erf various papers; on the death of Mr E. T. G.illon in 1906 he became editor of The Evening Post, Wellington, and retained the position with honor and credit for two decadies.
