A Levin Petition
LIVE 'STOCK SALJiS DAY. The following petition wars forwarded to the meeting of the Levin stock auctioneers lie'.d in l'almerstou last Saturday by the busi'noiss men of this town. Tlie store and business men- areanxioiis Lo foim with tho fanners to make ihe isalc a success, anc'i it Wednesday is selected by the auctioneering firms it is to be hoped that they deter that tlji.y till af.er next June, thus enabling the townsfolk to alter half-day for the convenience of the farmers of this district, doing business heie. Fanners should understand that the holiday cannot be changed;, bylaw, until June, 1917 To the aueiicneers and stock a lid station agents carrying oil business in the township of Levin and adjoining district— We, the undersigned residents of Levin, now carrying on business ill Levin, in view of the proposal for holding a combined stock sale in Levin on "\\ednesd>ay of every week, desire-to place before you our reasons for asking yon, to holdi such sale on some day of the week other than Wednesday. Our reasons are as follows:— I.—Wednesday is the day on which the statutory weekly half-holiday or th? Retailers in Levin and surrounding district is observed!. 2.—lt would be a source of very con-' sidera'ble inconvenience to the farming community of the district and highly prejudicial to us from a business standpoint if the proposed combined sale is held on our weekly . half-holiday, as many fanners in the district live a considerable distance from' Levin and hive few opportunities excepting on sale days of visiting the township and transacting their business. 3.—Should we be compelled to alter our present half-holiday we wouldi not have the same opportunities and •facilities of obtaining recreation :-s we enjoy at present for the reason that in other districts contiguous to Levin the weekly half-holiday is also observed on Wednesday, and therefore we would not be able to meet or make engagements with sporting clubs and .associations from such surrounding 'districts. Hut should Wednesday be fixed as the day for such combined stock sales, we would tisk you to defer the commencement of the sales till the end of June, 1917. for the following reason: to give its an opportunity of altering our weekly halfholiday to some other <Liy of the week. Dated at Levin, thisjst day of September, 1916. Cvames of tradespeople here follow).
