Sir iDouglafe Huig reports : —The enemy bombarded our front lino trenches and the greater portion of our front south of Ancre. They .attacked in the morning west of Guirieinon, between the (plumes and the Montauban-Guille-mot road, but were repulsed. We further progressed east and south-west of Mouquett Farm. We occupied four hundred yards of trenches along the Courcellette-1 hiepval road. The importance the enemy attached to the Thiepval sector was shown by the great effort made to recover ground on the Leipzig salient. The enemv recently affected great concentintion of guns in this area. In support of last night's attacks the enemy delivered an attack south of Thiepval village with the Prussian Guard. Tho attack' was pressed determinedly everywhere, but was repulsed with very heavy losses. The success of the defence was largely due to the gallantry of the "Wiltshires and AY..v. cestors, who, despite a heavy bombard ment, held 00.
We repulsed an attack on our trenches westward of Givenchy. The enemy bombarded and captured trenches westward of Givenchy and IDelvillo Wood. In two of our neropllflne raids somb of the principal radwflv sidings, lines of communication and several trains were hit. Considerable damage was done to lolling stock. In fhn evening there was artillerv activity at Mhi-met/. Wood, north of DelviTlo Wood and at "Ronlenconrt and La Canture. east of /ille-beke.

Paris, August 20. A communique states Prisoners on Thursday total f>oo. The Germans gained a footing in advanced trenches at A illy Wood. The* were immediately expelled.
