■Carterton residents were very suiprised on .Saturday uight at the visitor a strong force of police from Wellington. and a picket of To soldier* from l'eat hers toil military camp. k.n<juirie> elicited that a rumour was afloat that Carterton residents and some soldiers intended to rMid the former home oi a man who is said to have deserted to the German* lines. Ihe arrival ot the police and a picket was the first inttHjution that anything of the kind wa.s toward. Everything was perfectly quiet and orderly, and no demonstration whatever was made. The military picket returned to camp at 10 o clock on .Sunday night, but three police patrolled the grounds of the house where the alleged traitor's parents reside, during Sunday and Sundlay night, but everything was quiet. The police have now left town. The rumour of the projected riot did not start in Carterton, the first intimation here being the 1 arrival of the police.
