j ITEMS FROM THE .MAIL. i Mr Sunley, of Manakaiu, has disposed of his farm to Mr A. Stuekey, of Levin, who, of recent date, returned from ' South Africa. The Otaki Patriotic Society has purchased £60 worth of war loan certificates. It has been suggested by Mr T)ami. of Otaki railwiay. that a euchre tournament be held at Otaki between teams representative of the railway and township. say forty a-*side. the losers to pay For an art union ticket for the sections of land given by Mr Byron Brown, tickets to be awarded to the winners. As the land is being disposed of for patriotic purposes, it its hoped the suggestion will be acted on. Mr W. H. Field, .member for the district, has been in communioation with the Telegraph Department on the question of improved facilities, and of more private communications, on the Manawatti line. Mr. Field is endeavouring to have a line taken from Reikiorangi to the Akatarawa wire end. so ns to establish a connection between Waikanae and the Upper Hutt. and t thus reeluce the distance, and therefore cost of messages, between our coast a.ncl the Wairarapa. Last Sunday, at mass at the Otak : ( Catholic Church, the Rev. Father l Henry imade feeling reference to the , 'deaths of Mrs. J. T>'Ath, of Ma.nakau. j and T/ieut. Gordon Harper, brother of ] Mr George Harper, of Otaki. who died from wounds received in Eirypt. Special music was rendered by the choir. Miis Kilsby singm<i the requiem hymn , "Requipsciant in Pace," and Mrs. TI.M. j TVAtli Maiscaerni's "Ave ~iaria." Mrs. Fisher played the Dead March from j "Saul" as a concluding voluntary. £
