PARS. FRO.VI THE MAIL. On Friday night last a number oi Otaki residents. paid & visit to "lviikwali," the residence of Mr Robt. Lee, to celebrate the 71st birthday of that respected townsman. -u.r Dempster, who was in the chair, congratulated Mr Lee on having reached such a ripe age, and on enjoying such health and vigour. He also read a number of apologies from gentlemen unable to attend, including one from the member fei the district (Mr Field). Mr Dampste • presented Mr Lee with a band 8om« pipe on behalf of a few friends.
Manakau's patriotic demonstration on Friday next (Declaration Day 1 should be an enthusiastic >.n.l su-ccess-fui one. Addresses will be given by Messrs. W. H. Field and R. A. Wright, M's.P., therefore the public may look forward to something good in this respect. In addition there will bo appropriate songs, and a poi dance by the Maori girls. Admission will be by silver coin.
In connection with Declaration Day. the chairman of the Otnki ' Town Board has called a public meeting, to* be held at the Druids' Hall on Friday night next, when patriotic addresses will be given, and the resolution submitted to every town in New Zealand will be brought forward for adoption. A large and representative gathering is hoped for.
At the Otaki Methodist Church last night, the Rev. Hedley White put the following resolution: ''That, in view of the fact that a previous resolution had been passed urging the member for this district (Mr W. H. Field,) to do his utmost to secure the early closing of hotels during the currency of'the war,we express keen regret that Mr Field, when the War Regulations Bill was before the House last week, failed to register his rote in favour of the reduction of hotel hours; also that we deeply deplore the fact that Parliament refused to provide for the earlyclosing of hotek. and failedi to make provision for submitting the question to a leferendutu of the people. - ' The resolution was passed unanimously, as were similar resolutions placed before the Te Horo and Manakau Methodist Church congregations last night.
