On several occasions during the last six months Ihe Chronicle has referred to the improved financial results achieved by the New Zen-land railways under their . new management. This improvement has been due, to some extent, to the increased charges made, but the increase of revenue lias been so great that the fact is left evident that good: Jiianfigoment lias been an oven-greater factor than, extra charges in achieving these desirable results. One especially noteworthy feature has been the decrease in the percentage of working expense,-. As a result of this, the North and South Jsliinds both show considerable improvement, though the South Island's v losH-pronnonced in consequence of the bad season that was experienced la<;t year.
