Pozieres and Guillemont practically constitute powei'ful bastions at present held by the German line.

Sir Douglas Haig reports that there has been continuous shelling on both sides during the night. Enemy coun-ter-attacks yesterday between the high road and Guillemont did not gain any i advantage, our machine guns and artillery inflicting the heaviest casualties. We gained some ground on the high road near Guillemont, despite the enemy's stubborn defence.
