A communique states: —-North of the iSommo we are consolidating positions won in the morning. During the day we captured 2900 prisoners, three guns, thirty machine gurus and much material. We continued our progress, bombing the rest of Thiaumont work. Aii squadrons bombed the etations of Thinuville, Montmedry, Brieulles, and Roi.sel and military establishments nt Louach, north-east of Basle. London, July 21. Sir Douglas Haig's communique 'states: — ' North of the Bazentiin-Longueval line we advanced about 101 >0 yard's, despite stubborn opposition. Heavy fighting continues in the northern outskirts of Longueval village and Belville Wood. The remainder ol the main battlefield is unchanged. A German communique states: —The English attacked in considerable force positions west and worth of Flomelles. Counter-attacks threw them back from the points they bad penetrated. The English again penetrated Longueval and Belville Farm. Counterattacks compelled them to retire though they still hold portions ot the village and the farm. Anglo-French attacks on the whole front from Foureaux Wood to the Soiunio began this morning. The first attack in the afternoon wa.s broken, tile French made two unfruitful attacks in the region of iielloy. w'e thrice repnlsedi attacks in the morning on the Estrees-Jrioyicourt sector.
