LOCAL & GENERAL
A Cheviot residienit has forwarded t'j Mr \V. Eccletou, of Lovinj a late copy of The Cheviot News, a North Canterbury newspaper. It is a most interesting 'übiicatkm. Page 1 appears on a diagonal slope ; the Cheviot correspondent writes to lias Levin friend that this page has appeared in this twisted aspect ever since the big earthquake, several years ago. A list of "properties for sale" is alleged to have been published without alteration, or diminution for fourteen successive years and some interesting remarks on "defective eyesight" are said to have twenty years of unaltered publicity behind them, and' to be the pronouncement of a man who intended to begin business in Cheviot I"B9<J, but who is st'Jl "to arrive," lie having "recently returned from London." The editorial comments are brisk. The Cheviot soliool committee iately agreed amongst itself to devote part of the proceeds of the children's concert to the Navy League Funds, although previously the committee had decided, unanimously, that the whole of the proceeds be handed over to the "school sports, piano and library fund." The editor remarks that "iVlrs Thomas, secretary to the committee, was not notified of the meeting that revoked the latter decision, because sbe was known to be against the Na,vy League proposal." The editor has 110 objection whatever in gainst the Navy League, but his natural candour compels him to say that ■the committee's action is wrong. There is far too much of this sort of thing going on in Cheviot, and our remarks do not by any means apply to the school committee alone. . . .if such metliodte are pursued there is no use in electing « school commMeo at n.jtl.
