rou: correspondents' opinions are their own; the responsibility of editorial ones makes sufficient ballast for the editor's shoulders.] THE COMPULSION BILL. , Sir, —Apropos ot the attitude and decision of the Flaxmill Employees' Union re this Bill, the remarks of the Rev. J. Serginson, .at Timaru, are emphasised, and they appeal to me as singularly appropriate and rational. Agitators of the Parry, Semple and Donaldson type are typical as of labour's false prophets, the stormy petrels of industrial unrest (Talk to Labour—By the Rov. J. Serginson). In the course ot an address on "Some Aspects of international Peace," delivered at Timaru recently, he »id that trades unionism had to a great extent forgotten its high calling, and had been captured by the unworthy and steered into devious paths, with its eye turned' on la false objective. It had lost much of its moral dignity and had become unscrupulous, truculent and anti-national. It had beoome arbitrary and quarrelsome, ashamed of common debent griatitnde and appreciation, and was revealing an inoreased determination to find grievance**. Claiming the right to criticise everybody and fling its censure broadcast, it waa aosnrdi.v impatient and petulant •when criticism and censure was occasionally turned upon it. He bad great respect for the workers, but organized Labour had been to a grant extent thrown off its balance by the .fiery nonsense of false prophets, who fed it mad with impossible economics, illusory dreams, and clam* animosities.—! am, ato.
