The Chronicle LEVIN. TUESDAY, JUNE 13, 1916. THE PATRIOTIC FUNDS.

The movement- "to strengthen the fund,s that Levin and district possess for the relief of wounded or destitute soldiers in the days to come is being persevered ill, and) there is prospect- of successful issue to the commendable attempts of leading citizens to establish a County L'und tor this purpose, and to permanently invest the moneys that will be raised. The Chronicle has explained the fact before, out a reiteration perhaps is desirable, that although there is deemed to be money enough available in the existing funds for relief ol ali .necessitous cases now existing, the propects or the years ahead are less rosy. Against every case ot need now known, a dozen or more may arise after the war, and in those days the financial position of Now Zealand generally may be less favourable ior liberal giving than it "is now. iherefore it is highly desirable thtia the present effort should be persevered in, and such a sum of money l'aised in this town and district that other parts of the county may ne induced to work whole-heartedly in support of tho County Fund for AVoiwided Soldiers and their Dependents. Two meetings of the Levin .and District Patriotic Society already have been held, to diseu6s the County Fund proposal with its prime movers, and a good deai ot 1 quiet but persistent and exacting work has been and still is being done by the citizens and settlers amongst us who have at heart this oommendable cause. That is will meet with whole-hearted support from every person amongst us who is so situated as to be able to do eo, to even a sliglit extent is, we beiieve, tlie general wish of the community . The contention that the existing funds of the various patriotic societies have been sufficient for all the needs that have arisen heretofore is borne out by the records, of the Levin amd District Patriotic Society; and as this society gives a- fair reflex of the general condition, we take it that a good ease is made out thereby for the investment of such moneys as sfiall bo specifically subscribed to "The County Fund." The local society has raised in ail (as-

sisted by other centres) close upon £5400, but the greater part of this money now is beyond its control. A brief resume of the work of the Levin and District Patriotic Society was given to The Chronicle, yesterday, by tho eocety's hon. treasurer (Mr P. W. Goldsmith). Since the society in conjunction with viaiTous 'parts of the Horowhenua County raised £5000 by the big carnival in 1915, of which amount £3000 passed through the Levin treasurer's hands, <& further sum of £380 has been*, raised in Levin and paid into the society's funds. A good deal of this money has been distributed. The effort made for the British Red Cross Society took about £90, t'i'2 went to the Hospital Ship Fund, and over £60 was handed over to the Soldiers' Christmas Gift Fund. To tho fund for providing soldiers' comforts at the Masterton Military Camp some £18 were paid, and Redi Cross Work had received subscriptions totalling £50 part of which money still is in hand. Roughly speaking, the position of Levin «nd District Patriotic Society is that it holds to-day a cash balance of £123, £40 of which belongs to the ißed Cross Fund, and the 'balance to the Fund for R«lief of Wounded Soldiers and their Dependents. We take it that the establishment of a County Fund will not dry up aU the n venues of rcvcnuo that have been availaible to tho Levin Society, and that the generosity of tlfo people will maintain' its" hinds at whatever level its future activities may require.
