« NiBWS PAES FROM THE MAIL. Mr H. S. Monro, weli known in this district as a farmer at Te Horo, andi some yeaxe ago at Manakau and Shannon, haa enlisted, and is now at the Featherston camp. There was only a fair attendance at Bright'* Theatre on Sunday night iast, when a sacred concert was held, in aid of patriotic funds. The however, met with a most enthusiastic) reception, and the concert programme is declared to bo one ot the best rendered at Otaki. Mr il»miirton Hodges' items "were delightfully given, and fully appreciated, while he waa ably supported by popular local artists. The Otaki race meeting, just concluded, is claimed by the polioe to hare been the moat orderly for many years. Only two 'drunks' were apprehended, while very few were seen under the influence of liquor on or about the course. There was one regret/tabla feature at the Otaki race meeting and) that was the fact that the town waa unable to raise a brass band. For many years the Natives hare supplied the music, but on this occasion the band from Levin had to be requisitioned.
A nasty aooident occurred at Manakau on Friday last. Two of Mr A. W. J. Bull's little children were jjaying together, when one—the eMe» aged some three years or so—chopped the 'baby's thumb very severely, almost severing it from the hand. The iittlo eafferer, aged about a year, watt at onee taken to Otaki for medical attention. The injury was so severe that the thumb of the right hand was fcwfe. Corporal 'Henere Tahiwi on Monday returned to Wellington, whore he will undergo further treatment for his injured leg. Mr. R. S. Young, of Ohau, has een appointed to the position of oanvaaser and stock agent for Messrs Abraham and Williams' Otaki Branch. He is to 'be transferred from Otaki to Levin next week. Dubno.
