The Chronicle LEVIN. TUESDAY, MAY 30, 1916. A CHRONICLE PASTORAL.
With recrudeseent growi and oroaJs. Levin now greets her Winter rain; but joy springs in her dairy foik, for fields are growing green again. Ifhe cows, well rugged, in comfort 'bide; their i>anae showers fall twice a day, and on the milk-pail's scalded sides beat out a joyous roundelay. 'Wliile diays are wet, the boys "husk" maize; dad holds mam's wool, audi she winds Glick; hired man news life's tamgled ways in magazines or "Deadiwood Dick"; each girl her glory-box must see, and glimpse a future gaiiy bright, where sweethearts now mil fousbandls be—and stay to supper ev'ry night! So runs the rune where iolk sow seeds; where haystacks rise, and winter roots are stored to meet the latent needs when father Frost nips all green shoots. But whore the stock grows lank and 'can through hope deferred while seeking iswede; pr searching, till their eyes grow dim, to gam one rib-extending feed, the housewife's eya. in sorrow melts, the 'farmer cries "Levin is rotten!" the poor boys tighten up their belts; «their sisters' joys are all forgotten ; the baker calls but onee a week, and waits for "something on account," tii! from his dwindling purse (once sleek) the tarmer drips?*a email amount. So those who farm in slothful way perforce must "dree their weird" in rain, and flounder through a slushy May to ineet grim <wain£ in June again. Meanwhile the Farmers' Union meets in old Le-vin this very diay, defiant of the winter's sieet: EAOH DELEGATE HAS STORED HIS HAY.
