THE LUCERNE

(Written for The Chronicle.) Oli, 1 have seen the Lucerne, A bride arrayed in white. Her jewels dainty dew drops Like tears of deep delight; The happy bees and songbirds Her wedding music made, And she as 'bridal favours Gove them her sweets "and shade. And 1 have seen the Lucerne By Summer's warm' embrace •Endued with matron beauty. And bowed with fertile grace. The balmy breeze and sunshine Their kindly homage paid., As in the waiting cartel-bed The latont life was laid. And I have seen the Lucerne When Summer's life was spent, Her nabled form grown rigid, Her blackened branches rent. And birds and bees were silent. The winds their sorrows told, While down her grief-seamed featnrvis Bi<j loving rain-drops rolled. M. O. B. Levin ~ May 19th, 1916.
