4 36,679 SUMMO.NTSES. Itemarkaible revelations on gfiiuggl*ng are supplied in an official statement by the Dutch General Headquarters. It is pointed out that during 19To there were 36,679 summonses issued smuggling, of which about 10,000 wero at the instance of the Customs, 5000 by the State police, 20,000 by the military authorities, 600 by the local, police and 800 by the combined forces. During the first fortnight of January this year there were 1720 cases. Last year 1297 people were sent iaiway from the frontier. From January 1. to November lo of last year the following were stopped* at the frontier:—774 horses. 53 cows, 49 sheep, 20 pigs and 205 chickens. In the area of the oom- | niander of the field army there were seized 429 gallons of benzine, 3400 gallons of varnish, 13J tons of leather, 27.500 gallons of petrol, 21 tons of caibbflges and 23tone of seeds. In the area of the territorial commander on the Dutch- Uerman frontier there were seized 65 tons of potatoes, 22$ tons of margarine, 1350 gallons of machine oil. 80,000 gallons and 2194 barrels of ramus oik, 22tons of eataible fa/ts and 65 tons of sausages and meat. In the Zealand area, among othor things, were seized 25 tons of gmin, 25tons of flour, 26 tons of bran and 10J tons of steam coal. In the same, period it was necessary to take stricter measures, andi 62 smugglers were killed or wounded 'by fire from soklipns. It is now forbidden to store any goods within an hours walk of the frontier.
