On Tuesday and Wednesday, 30th and 31st May, the Wellington provincial conference ot the New Zealand Fanners' Union will be held in Levin. The following notices of motion are to be brought up for discussion and decision:— War Taxation. The Executive to move: "That the Conlerence express its ioynl support to | the National Government in this time of national crisis, and in view of further necessary taxation proposals, would ask that the equality of sacrifice by all sections of the community be kept in view, the farmers be'njj quite willing to bear their fair share in such sacrifice." Shannon to move : "Tint the Government, if levying more taxes be urg;j to levy a tax on ali tickets of theatres, picture shows, totalisator, and also on beer and spirits." Forestry. The Executive to move: 'That i.he conference urge upon the Minister oi Lands the importance of starting forestry operations in suitable districts in the North Island." Tree Planting. Palinerston North : "That tree planting by farmers be encouraged by the Government remitting certain taxation on laud so planted." Public Economy. The Executive:»" That this Conference strongly urge upon the farming community the urgent necessity for practising the severest economy in the purchase of goods uiaauiaoturecl outside the Empire." Embargo on Hides. 'Ihe Executive: ''The Conference filter its protest against the action of the Government in taking 10 per cent of the hades over 4olb at lOd per lb, whereas in the open market they are worth considerably more. The 'oss entailed should fall upon the revenue and not upon the producer."
War Bonus. The Executive: "That the Conference supports the recommendation of the Arbitration Court to i&rge employers Ol labour to pay employees a war bonus in preference to any permanent, increases during the war." Compulsory Service. The Executive: "That it compulsory service lb considered! necessary by the Government this conference 01 tarm- ' ors loyally Bupport same." Employment of Returned Soldiers. The Executive: "That the Dominion Executive formulate a scheme to assist in providing employment tor returned soldiers." Land Aggregation. Feilding: "That in view of the serious menace aggregation of Jnn<J ifbecoming to the welfare of this country, the Government oe urcred to uako more e'Seetrive measures to same." Stock Auctions. Makara : "That' tne i rovinoia'# Conference- set up a committee to confer with stock auctioneering iirms operating in the Province and endeavour to arrange a fair commission basis ior the sale of store stocK, the present rates being considered too high." Pahautanui: "That some effort be made to bring aJbout uniforto commission charges on botn stock gnles." iSiiaifnon : "That auctioneers be asked to note in their books andi in accounts rendered to buyers, any guarantee given with Btock sold by fheun." The Executive: ''That the question of Btock commissions be again considered with a view to obtaining ■*■«>- ducton in auctioneers' charges." Book-keeping in Primary Schools. Makara-: "That the Provincial Conference approach the Department of Education, requesting that elementary book-keeping, based/ on rural operations, be made a compulsory eub .-ct of the school syllabus for country schools, the subject toeang a-MoweS to remain optional for other schools." Bag. Registration. Palmerston North: "That nil Maori owners of dogs be the same as Europeans, under the Local bodies' Act." Feilding: "That the Dog Registration Acit be 60 amended as to compel that all dogs must wear registered collars of current year continually." Motor Tax. Pftilnierwton North :—T hat the Government impose a tax on *11 motor vehides—such tax to be expended on J the upkeep of roads."
