SCHOOLING

At school 1 learned a lot that Helped me not at all; I council, till I was iot, cheap maps upon the wall, and learned the names of hills in Lapland and Cathay, to trace 'ho creeks and rills that wander near Bombay. L learned, a lot oif dates (when finished ■with tiiie map), ■when kings and other ska,tee went forth to have a scrap. The midnight oil I burned, and bulked the Rule of Tnree, and all things learned! were not worth shucks to me. x learned some Latin root®, but never dtid they aid to buy a pair of boots, a buckeaw or a spade. 1 dug awhile in Greek, uid when I went to work i earned tTireo bones a week, as haberdasher's cierK. They never used to teach the things that really count; the youth who tried to reach the top of learning's mount would find, in after diayis, tlie knowledge he'd acquired obstructed all his way«, aaid made his wishbone tired.
