OTAKI and DISTRICT
Ni-nri 11 EMS FlttAu .-^KIAIL,. Private Abbey, brother ol the Rev. VY. H. Abbey i or Levin, who is on a visit to this district, participated in the memorable charge maue by ihe .111zacs at Gallipoli on August Bth. A par i.y oi men 6et out on this daring enterprise, and only six (of whom Private Abbey was one) returned. A rather seuesationial incident occurred at Manakau on Wednesday last. A large mob of cattle, while being driven en route to Wellington, became infuriated while near Mr Staples's homestead and had to be naddocked. A push bicycle and. a motorcycle, which had been left in tho paddock by some workmen, were very badly damaged by the cattle, the push bike being practically smashed to pieces. A linesman went to the rescue, but the beasts turned their attention to him, and he promptly ascended a handy tree with much agility. One bullock. which had evidently become ''winded," fell dead at tlie foot of the tree. Tho cattle were in such a bad way that in all probability they will eamplete their journey via train.
