The Germans yesterday deployed on a front of three' kilometres. Successive waves followed in small assau!tiiu columns. Our artillery and infantry fire inflicted heavy losses. Our artillery caused several fires at Remabots in Lorraine. A German aeroplane fell in our 'lies near Noyon. The occupants were taken prisoner. Paris, April L A communique states.: —Our artdlery blew up a blockhouse ana an ammunition depot at Avoncourt wood. A violent German attack was made between Haucourt and Bethincourt, against our old positions north of Forges Brook, the enemy not knowing that we had evacuated them on the night of 31st March. Our surprise fire from new positions inflicted important losses. We further forced back the enemy from Oailftte wood. Our find! coun-ter-attack was especially violent. VVe regained the western portion of Vaux village. Thirty-one Allied aircraft, as a reprisal for the raid on Dunkirk, dropped 83 heavy bombs on enemy -antonments at Kevlin. Risen and Soutbu Ist.
