Regarding tho cust oi supplying ga,s to the Jjevin Bowling C-luu'ts recent gasi.ght tournament t-ne mayor'reported that che total cost came to JCi 18s 3d. He thought it would bo -a lair thing to remit huii tue amount aB'J charge thu oiab £4. Councillor France also considered that tile course proposed b> the mayor was a fair one, Uouncilloi lieuipeey liud no desire to be>ittle tlie bowling club's effort. . Itdeserved commendation lor its effort, but lie did not think it right that the sum of £4 ol' the ratepayers' money should be given to the club and it get the credit of it. if tlie council desired to help the patriotic funds it should make a straight.vote and then the ratepayers would get the credit that should be theirs. Councillor Robertson had a certain amount of sympathy with Councillor Dempsfey's attitude. fie moved that the amount in question, £<t, be donated by the council to the West Coast Farmers' Patriotic Fund, and the ratepayers of the borough then would get the credit of it. it would .be a eontriosition of the people of the borough 10 the fund. The mayor took exception to the attitude taken up by Councillors Dempsey and Robertson. They should nave expressed their opinion as distinctly at the former meeting, when the idea was that the club was' to be given generous consideration. He had given the ciub to understand that they would he treated in that .manner. Councillor Dernpsey rejoined thatthe mayor could just as well be accused 'for want of frankness. They had been given to understand! at t-he last*meeting that the total cost would only Tie about £4. and instead it was riearly £8. The ratepayers should get the credit of any money voted. His attitude at last meeting was against giving a penny in the way suggested. Tho "Mayor said fhp council and ratepayers would get tua credit for the moiie,"'". He would oppose the motion. ■ Councillor France seconded Oouncil- >•>!• Robertson's motion which read: — T'-.it the sum of £4 h:- donated to the "West Coast Farmers' rntriotie Association I)V remission of enarger. tor gaa lighting at the gaslight tournament held nv the j/ovin Rnwliiv; CuU raently. ROAD OVERSEER'S REPORI. The road ovevseer reported as lollops:—J lave h«d the 'footpath in front of Stiles and Mathcson's premises in Oxford-street lowered and retarred and sanded. The yard at the 'back of the library also had lieen tarred and sanded, and the same treatment applied to the footpath near Gibson's Maok.wiitli shop: and to prevent it from Wi-onldn", np it should bo given another coat of tar and, sand. Two thousand yards of metal have heen shifted in the Bartholomew road pit. The eoii.trn."'t(M*s are making Rood progress with tile crushing of the metal. At present I am. trimming sonie of the Footpaths and placing the screenings froiin. the crusher on them. ■ The county engineer expects to start crushing as soon an the borough council is finished. I suggest tjint the (borough couneii do all the stripping at the pit and charge the county council for Dhe work. * If the borough oouncil did the work it wonTd keep the pit clean. Th" report was adopted.
