BREAD RATION REDUCED
4 Luist January, before the Reichstag debate in wh:ch Herr Delbruck, the Alin is tor of the Interior, maclg another of Jiis conso a-borj- speeches about the teod supply, the German puiblio was giveir aai unpleasant surprise. Xt was announced that the Imperial corn authorities had decided t|o'-* suspend the various measures which in the course of last >year' mitigated the rigours of the bread ticket scheme, and to revert t-o the original scale of daily rations was fixed, in Hie spring of ISJIo. The only "mitigations' to remain are certain .provisions which allow larger rations to persons engaged in heavy manual labour. 'tlii' official notice declared that a .-•eii'sus of supplies taken on November 10 showed that tljere was sufficient corn to feed the population and the ;> rmy until the next harvest. It had, however, been shown that tite relaxations introduced at the beginning of the second year of war had produced the erroneous impression that the supplies were more llian adequate and tliat caution was unnecessary. The notice adds:— ~ This view is erroneous. In the Kc;.-ond year also' we must observe strict economy, if we want, not only to have enough, hut. to" enter upon the next economic year with adequate reserves. The relaxations now suspended had increased the daily ration of flour and bread.
