A correspondent, of the Taranaki Heraildi states that the d<ilry factories wore to distribute nearly jWO.OOIt in the (Sti'a-tford district 011 Saturday. •So pro]ilic are the root crops in the Wairarapa at the present time (reports tne Age) that ci difiit:ulty is being experienced in procuring stock to feed them down, A Feilding settler who was «t .Uasterton last week tdld an Age reporter that he had an abundance of roof, crops audi could not find sheep to feed them down. He is, in consequence, buying 21)00 sheep from the Marlborough Sounds. "It is the silliest lot of drivel that a Government has ever Ijeen guilty of," remarked Councillor Anderson at the Petone Borough Council meeting recently, when the issue of armlets for exempted recruits was mentioned. [1 a man is weak, he is not. going to advertise the fact by going about labelled like a prize fowl." Some excitement and incidentaiiy a little jdarm, was occasioned at Ara--111 oho recently 'by the escape of an old man monkey from the Zoo. The animal, as it subsequently transpired, was tame enough, but its size and appearance were such as to suggest unpleas--11 at possiblities, especially to any children who might arouse its wrath. There was, too, the danger of injury by shock of any woman or child meeting the big and ugly brute unexpectedly. Consequently the chase for tlio vagrant was a serious business, and he was ultimately {located among the. upper branches of ,a tree wherein he had stopped for a rest after Ins exciting scamper through the gardens and over roofs. To the relief of the onlookers the big fellow submitted quietly to being roped iby his keeper, by whom ho was led back to captivity. In preparation for the winter Levin Borough Council is arranging for metal crushing on a big scale. At a later date the crushed metal will be placed ou the roads of the borough. Meanwhile the metal is to be crushed in . reodines for use, and carted to central localities. Tenders for the carting aninvited, by advertisement from the council, in which details are set out (see page 3). Specifications may: be seen and fiidl particulars ascertained on application to the Town Clerk !.Mi B. R. Gardener). Horowhenua A. and J'. Aossocintion will hold a sale of cheese next Saturday evening near the L«vin post office. The cheese was manufactured at the Weraroa Experimental Farm dairy from milk obtained "by the society when conducting its butt erf at competition for dairy cows. The proceeds ot '.ho sa-ie will he given to the Wounded Soldiers' Fund.

Assuming tluit the Derfflinger mdi Soydlitz did sink or were beached, they have doubtless been salved"" and repaired, and by now should be nearly lit for rsoa again. The Grand Fleet wihl have to'face a second hard winter, but it is uovv much stronger mid better equipped with speedy auxiliaries than was the case a year ago. and the "wntch on the sea" will be as strenuous as over while it lasts. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Hoi owhenua County Council will be held in the County Council Oham- | bers, Levin, on Saturday nest, coinI jneiieing at f.30 a.m. The business willt include Councillor Kebbell'.s notice of motion to have map of Wirokino riding and Tokoinaru riding made up to date, and also to procure similar maps for souihorn ridings. A coitiv-houEje keeper Jias obtained :Cf.jO damages from the Bermonusey uorongn Counciil, iiaigtaiid, for dam- ; ages to iiis business caused by the miiuicipaliiy'a method of (fcstroying rotten eggs. In February last year Hie fiiiiiicii began to cart large quttiititich of rotten eggs to the wharf and file destruction went oti tor the groatei ■pan of the day. The council iiafl creeled a kind ol mangle on -heir whan. Cases of. eggs were thrown into it, a man turned a handle a wire-netting caught the .shells, and tin? inside of the rotten eggrs ran oow.i into a gu.iiy. Counsel tor the defendant borough said the focal authorities iab .urei'i under extia linary diffici.il-. ties because of the delay of ships j bring:iig flieso eggs. Belore tiie w<iv when these ships wed +o aeeomjj'n'sh their journey without- delay, about 10.U0U rotten eggs were destroyed per day, but hortly after the war. when < lei a yi- of shipping took place, the figures res" lo something like 100,000. and during the last: few months, the Rcrn.ond-ey council have bad to destroy 2~>\ million rotten eggs.
