[rBIt I'IIESS ASSOCIATION.j CLtIIIGY'MAN'S RESIGNATION. Auckland, Feb. 29. The Rev. J. S. Campbell, who recently resigned his position as Congregational minister at Onehunga Church, explained the circumstances to a crowded puiblic meeting on Sunday. He stated tliat slander and malicious gossip had beou at work, and his honour had been impugned. His present painful position arose because of his refusal to marry anyone save the lady of his own choice. He hail been on friendly terms with u lad.y member of his congregation, but their intercourse had never got so far as an engagement, between tliom would be unsuitable, albetween thorn woui diie unsuitable, although he had always had the greatest respect for the lady and her family. He had been foolish only in allowing his acquaintance witli tlie lady to proceed so far that he had written certain letters which the ladiy's family had made public. It was obvious that he had acted foolishly in writing at all, although there was nothing wirong in the letters.' The lady herself made no charge against him; but the lying tongue of the scandalmonger had ptrt stories in circulation until h#*f>'fls compelled to make a public explanation. He intended to remain in Onehunga and fight these lies. He would continue to in-each as a missionary, andi it need be would work as a tradesman to support himselifA lady present stood up and denounced the persons who Had coupled her name with that of the minister, ■who was loudly applaudedi at the conelusion of his remarks. EPIDEMIC AMONG HORSES. Christohurch, This Day. A serious epidemic is causing a heavy mortality among horses - in the north of Oiiiitefbiirv. The animals are attacked with paralysis in the fcgs and then fall and do not rise again. Many of J:he symptoms are those of tetanus without the lockjaw.
