Cheaper Eggs
p , SO.MJE CAUSES. (Evening Post.) A derangement of the egg market scums to have occurred, the primary reason attributed being the importation ot large quantities of Asiatic c-ggs.' A writer in a Christchurch paper gives as a cause the forcing up of- the prices iii January which naturally brought about a decreased demand and an accumulation of eggs. Mr Simpson, manager of the New Zealand Poultry Industri*■=>. Ltd.. seated ou Saturday that fresh eggs, wholesale. in Wellington 011 'Thursday last, were Is 9d per dozen; to-day they were a glut at Is 7d. Asiatic eggs were quoted to-day at Is 5d per dozen and it was this importation from China which was causing the slump. He added that a good deal was being said about patriotism, but here was a practical illustration of how our industries could be affected by the pursuit of foreign articles. Fowl food; was extremely • dear as the result of £Ee war, and ,if the industry was further threatened, as seemed likely, many poultry men would have to go out of business. It might bo recalled that prior to the war many hundred thousand dozen eggs were imported by confectioners from Germany. The fact that this supply, which was suddenly stopped, has had to be met had no doubt affected the position.
