County Engineer's Report
The County engineei, Mr J. Malcolm, siiuunituU tue lo.lotting report to tliu iloi owheiuia G-ounty CJouncil a» its meeting today : le Hero ltiding. The Mangaone Iteikiorangi road ibl'idge is now satisfactorily finished and well within the estimate. 1 had some matin tenanco metal laid on this road audi it is now in lair order up to the new bridge, i,r a suriacoiuan is appointed in place of I'adden resigned 1 pronKuse to atant him stonebreajsijig on tins i<«id to get Iris hand in. 1 h*ive got tlie main road tro_a Wiaikanao to Te JdJoro railway station patched up, but the picce irom there to the Otaki rivor requires doing badly; the bridge also vvanus'Uie tralhc planking n.xed up; 1 will t.y ami got all done shortly. As the suifaccinan at te Hero has been busy harvesting lor a time so'ino of the work that requires doing is somewhat behind but it will soon be got at now; I mean tlie laising ol tillTe iloro beach road opposite the cheese factory and the repairing of the Wiiitaheke road (.Gear's Estate); the beach road is now in hand and the ether will be done shortly. There is still nothing done to warinanti calling tenders io,r the Gorge road extension, if the matter is soon settled I will call for tenders and let them be dealt with by the Councillors for tiie riding, it would not do to wait until the weather breaks. Ofcaki Riding. The roads in this riding are fair, they like all the other roads in fchCounty will not lot us forget that ■ he time for laying the maintenance metal is on us again. The overhridige is not finished yet, 1 think the Railway men will go away in a few days, when tliey do we wont be long over our part, the metalling 's tlie biggest job as there ia about lo chains to do. A survey has been made of a Native cemetery at the beginning of ae sand-hills on the YVaikawa beach roaa and they have taken in about 12 tq chains of our road; it will be necessary to form a new one and as it will go
through a fairly large sand-hill it wiii j cost about £40 to form it, as the mot.ii is right alongside and tue owners .aie ■willing to giivc it free of royalty. r think it. would be wed to metal it when we are about it as it -would, prevent drifting. J propose taking levels aaid, making a proper plan beiore next meeting, i-o there is still £400 £ for £ oil the Public Works llisUmate; we may be able to get some of it. there-is another place on this road nearer 1 ' e beach that demands attention, aa the AVaikawa stream is cutting awtiy the road, and either extensive protection worivfi will be required or a deviation of the stream wilt have to lie made. 1 think the deviation will be tbe ohoapeso as the stream is yery deep where tiie protection is N need*xi, but 1 will repent fully at next meeting. Wiruuino Hiding. The Beach road metalling contract ms now finished, and so is the formation oontract on tlie Gladstone road. t piropofflc getting ano<tlier email contract ready at once for the extension of tm road. If this is done it will serve all concerned for a long time. The metalling of Potts e> road is also hnisxied satieiautuiiiily. The widening oi the main read from the ivereru dreamery to the bottom of the hill at 1 liaiv aru reserve is now in hand and will I e finished in about ten day all goiny; well\ lam doing away with two bridges and siilb&trtutmg concrete pip i ;a as the bridges are completely rotteu. Good projrt'si, is oeing maue witn the consbrujtioa oi the drain in tiuuiion XI U 41, South Horou iienuu. If ll o weather continues good it will be au ished by next meeting. • if bieps a'. e. not taken soun to get me money U. huiali this work it will ue too late 'o ; this season as it is essentially a summer job, Toki iuaru Riduig. Nothing is doing in tins riding but tlie usual uinimteiiance. 'ihe timber < has been ou order lor some time for the anttill bridge on the IviugsUm ioau. , 1 expect it will turn up in a day or i two. The slips have all been removed I from the Tokomani Valley road, and I it ia now in fail' order. The main i countjj roatl from the dhannon raiiwuv i statiom to the Alaranui liaximll will be < in a had way if .the weather breaks, s 1 propofle to oali tenders ii»r metalling, to be in at next meeting. t General. t 1 shall try to get the public nor its h estimated in at next meeting. AN t anetallinig ooatrauta should be let early n in Miaixjh tw we are too fate in nearly r all eases every year us the carting over e the soddea roads dote luucli harm. 1
