Otaki and District
XLWti FROM .TLLh MAIL. lii'' Minister of Internal Affairs has given permission to the Ota'ii Patriotic Society to r a file toiU' sections of tandi, donated 'by .local residient. tickets will be issued almost immediately. ft is understood that quite a number o 1 articles salvaged from the iire at Otaki on .Saturday were stolen. This kind of thing happens at every lire in tile town, and it is a pity that a stop could, not be put to such a dastardly practice.* So tar, very little interest has been displayed in the Kinniburgh Feathers this season, but Levin, having "no feathers to Hy with," have put m a challenge to the holders (Otaki. J The dentil occurred at I'aekakariki last week, after a short illness of Mr Percy Wheeler, son of the late Captain \\ heeler. Up to 15 years ago the late Air Wlieeler was engaged in the union Steam Ship Company's service, and he was purser on the Mono wai when that vessel broke her shaft, and drifted for a considerable time. He came ashore after that and; married the daughter of Mr James Ames, the City Valuer. Speaking at the tennis match at Otaki on Saturday, Mr C. L. Martinann, in referring to the War said he thought it was that very proficiency in tennis and other athletic gamy«s keeping themselves fit by indulging in that had made our New Zealanders so lit, and h«d helped them in their glorious achievements on the battlefield.. He thought those who could not go to the war were quite justified in such pastimes. While bathing in the Otaki river at the beaeli yesterday, a bathing party got into difficulties. Mr "Tod" Murray, accompanied by bis sister and Miss Donovan, was indulging in sky-larking [ on a log, when it rolled, and all were quickly floundering in the water. Mr \Yi Nieholls realised the seriousness of the ]K)sition, and quickly rescued Miss Donovan, who was the first to show signs of distress and then returned to help' young Murray ancl his sister. With no apparent difficulty and in good style, lie swam to shore with both earning warm praise from a number of interested spectators. .vlurry appeared greatly exhausted on being placed on terra firma, and Dr Tatton, of Otaki, with Mr T). M. Matheson of lievin, resorted to first-aid efforts, and soon had Murray on to his feet. In the opinion of these gentlemen, the two would have suffered badl.v. and h;ivc probably been •drowned:, bad not assistance been forthcoming. The plucky action of Nicholls is, we understand, to be brought before the LifeSaving Soeioty.
