County Council's Annual Meeting
COUNCILLOR MONK ELECTED

Punctually at 12 o'clock on Saturday the llorowhenua County Council, a.-, by law provided, held its annual meeting, and' elected a new chairman for the ensuing twelve months.
The retiring chairman (Councillor Watson) thanked the councillors for the support they hadl given him. The matters in the office wero now in a good stato. During the last lew months in tho office with Air Goldsmith ho round how tilings should be run. Last year tho ovorrait was £7705 and at presont was £8805, but of this amount £l*3bO went to the Charitable Aid JBoaird, and the council had purchased a niotor car lor £250, besides spending £100 xn getting matters squared! up so tnai'fho council was in a 6 good a position as at the beginning of tiro year, ne nopau the councillors would extenu the same support to his successor as tlioy had to him.
Councillor Cately said that the chairman had dono all no possibly coulu during his term of olhce. He thought some of tho council's difficulties arise through councillors becoming too friend* ly with members or tiie state.
Councillor Stephenson aid not tnink anyone could have got through tho troubles of the last few iuonuis oetter than the retiring chairman. He thought the cause of it was the* system that had obtained in the ofhee. aow councillors took time to pick up count}' aifairs, and were in the powor of tue stall. They had been pulled up Avith a round turn, and it would do tnem good!, ile thought that when a chairman wai I'cing well in his position he should hold the office for a longer term.
Councillor Rotter said tney nad had a rocky especially the chairman. It they had not had a change they might not have foundi tilings out. The chairman had done the uesi he coulu have clone in the matter. Councillor Ereeiuan did not thinK that one councillor should occupy the chair too long. councillor should have the right ot refusal. He thought that the next chairman would hud it plain sailing. ihe retiring chairman had done well iu his term oi office.
i Councillor Watson movedi and Councillor freeman seconded that councillor Mouk be elected chairman tor the ensuing twelve months. This was carried uaniniously. Councillor 'Monk, in taking the chair, said that he~yuitc realized the honour that the council was conferring on him. no was a young councillor and felt the responsibility, but was sure that with the assistance of councillors he would be successful. He thanked the councillors for electing him to the position. Councillors Freeman, Watson, Stepnenson, .Broadibelt and Ketter congratulated Councillor Monk on his election audi wished him ft successful term. The Council would do all it could to assist him. Councillor Oatoly said lie would wait til! the end of Councillor Monk's term before offering congratulations. lie hoped the new chairman would check > the gossip between some of the councillors at the table that went on during the meeting.
Councillor Monk took the chair and thanked the councillors tor their con gratutationa. He would appreciate all the help they couldi give him. Jie considered that the preseit system ol electing a ehannnn every twelve months wrong. If they had a good man in the chair they should keep him there lor a longer period than twelve months. At the same time they should not make a present oF the office to anyone.
