Horowhenua County Council
The monthly meeting of the Horowhenua County Council is being held to-day in the Borough Chambere, the chairman, Councillor Watson, presiding. .Following is the gist of tne correep'vidence received.—
The Mount Horbert County Council (South Island) wrote to the council to support a resolution that, in view or the fact that many people who are weil able to do so have not coritrTbuied to the patriotic funds, local bodies should be empowered to strike b< "patriotic fund rate."
The tence adjoining the water race through a, block of iU-i acres of land at Te iioro, known as iNordine'a Hat, lias to be kept in order Dy the council. Tho land in question has juet been purchased by B. L. Ellis, and he made applicatioii to the council to have the fence made stock proof or give him authority to have it done on ft the council's beiiaii'.
The Petone Borough Council recently passed a resolution to the effect that tho Government be asked to amend the War Pensions Act to the extent oi saying clearly and ' definitely the amounts payaible to the eoldiera , dependents in the event oi death on active service, and that such amounts be not subject to variation or reduction by the Pensions Board set up under the Act, and further that Parliament be summoned at onoe to effect these amendments. A copy of the resolution was received uy the council to-day, aridi a covering letter asking the council to support it.
Intimation was received from the Public Works Department lo the effect that it will not foe able to avail itself o' the assistance of local bodies in carrying out roadworks to tne saine extent as hitherto, arid tnat the Minister does not propose to offer votes for roads and bridges to local bodies this year to the same extent as has been done in the past. The reason for this change was stated to be that that loan raised recently iby tho Government will
have to suffice for public works while the war laets, and the present conditions had necessitated a considerable reduction in the rate of expenditure on certain public works.
Stock on Fairtield road extension havo caused A. F. Wilson considerable annoyance, and though he hae a substantial fence nt present, lfo will nave to go to the extra expense of erecting wire-netting if he waute to grow hedge trees, or olee sue Hie council for damages.
The Raglan County Council asked the council to pass a resolution dispensing with the services ot all single men eligible for military sendee, unices euoh men can produce a certificate that they hove been rejected, and that no single men t>c employed during the continuance oi the war. The northern council passed a resolution on these lines a few weeks ago.
J. A .Simeon, of Wellington, again wrote re his claim that the council should pay for the repairs to Bis motor which mot with the accident near Waikanae, nnd for which lie alleges the council is responsible because of the stato in which the road was left.
A. A. Butt, surfaceman, in the Otaki tiding asked to *bo allowed off for two months to assist in gathering tlio harvest in Canterbury.
