t'HE ISONZO LIGHTING
Rome, December b. An Italian soldier, describing the terrible .Isouzo lighting, says that it lasted a .whole fortnight. There was u! incessant bombardment and contin.ijut- charges. There were three charges on the one day and all failed. -The battle cry of "Savoia" echoed through the desolate valleys. 111 vain many o! our brothers laid down their lives, but were undaunted, and suddenly at midnight, iu a blinding snow.st..rm o'.;r battalion was ordered • to attack. We climbed precipitous heights; the snow whipped our faces and we could hardly see a yard before ue. There was no sign of the enemy until we were within ten yards o: our goal, and then a single ory rang out: our major's battle-cry "Savoia." \\o caught up the sound and fell on the trenches liko a cannon-ball. The first trench was J ful] of corpses from the previous cannonading and wo swept on and carried the .second and third lines, the enemy's survivors begging for mercy. Brisbane, This Day. Speaking at Bundaberg the Hon. W M. Hughes estyiiated the next year's war expenditure at over £50,000,000. A HINT FROM THE HON. W. M. HUGHES. A deputation from 'tne Industrial Council demanded the withdrawal of the new recruiting scheme, especially the questions. The Hon. \\. Hughes, in Refusing, said that if the unions assisted.the Government compulsion would not 1)0' necessary.
