Death of a Famous Racehorse
TEE DERBY WINNER ORME. The Duke of Westminster's famous died at the Eaton Stud last aged 26. Orme was foaled in 1889; and was by Ormonde out »i Angelica, an own sister to St. Simon. He won five races as a two year old, and was beaten once. His successes were gained in the Richmond, Prince of Wales's, and Homebred Foal Stakes, and the Dewhurst and Middle Park Plates. While he was being trained for tlie Two Thousand Guineas he was poisoned—an incident that created a great sensation, and a reward of a thousand sovereigns was offered for information which would lead to the apprehension and conviction of tlie guilty person, who was not discovered, however. It was July before Orinc was restored to health again. He marked his recoyery by .winning the Eclipse Stakes at Sandown Park. As a touryear old Orme won the Eclipse Stakes again. Altogether he secured in stakes £32,528. Orme retired to the stud in 1894, and was not long in making bis mark. He was : the sii'o of Flying For,. Orby, who also won the Derby and the One Thousand Guineas winner, Witch Mm.
