(B* our Resident Representative.} At the meeting of the Shannon School Committee held 011 Monday last it wa6 resolved to ask tho Board of Education what steps "fchoy proposed taking to proviso additional acconmodation for tlie children in view* ot the increased attendance. Mr Smith, who was Knocked down by the Now Plymouth train at Feildiag on Monday, was tlie lather of -Mr Smith, brickmaker, ot Shannon. CONCERT. The pupils of Miss Laurvig and Mrs Butler gave a grand concert in the Gillaudia Hail on Wednesday evening, assisted by several of our local vocalists'. The concert opened with an overture from Maritanu oy the orchestra. A very effective tableau illustrative of Britain and ner Allies followed, Mrs Gibson representing France, Miss Straiton Itussia anil Miss Mary Tremewan Britanni>, concluding with the National Antlitm, at which the whole audience rose and joined in. Two little pupils, Miss Otirran and Misß \l. Law gave piano solos, their playing reflecting credit 011 "their teachers. A very pretty Japanese song and dance by eleven pupils was followed by a very descriptive song, "Japanese Farewell" by G. Merwood and F. PicKett. Then there were more piano solos and a quartette by Emma Stern, Clorine Harris and the Misses Koach. Mr Powell sang "Your eyes have told ir.o ao" wit]i good expression. FiFuey Pickett, Doris Crowther, Majorie Bicliard•oo and Teddy Aim, tour promising young pupils played pianotofte selections very creditably for their years. R. Merwood won applause with his violin polo, played to the accompaniment of Miss Laurvig. Utile Mavis Terry Bang "Knitting" very prettily. Mibb F. Tremewan acquitted Jrerseli tfell in a piano solo as did also Miss Vera Galloway and Miss Laurvig in their duet. The first part conclude! witlh Miss 'LaurvTg's song Spring's Awakening," Which she gave to the, accompaniment of Mrs Butler. Sho gave an excellent rendering to a difficult song. In the Becond part Miss Straiton and Mr Tilling scored a success m their descriptive song "Betty and Johnnie," a humorous item which •was encored. Piano solos were given iby Mavis Terry, Avis Buckman, Freda Butler, Gwen Merwood, May Morgan, Esma Shankland, Vera Galloway, Doris Barker, (Eileen Butler, Agnes Aim, Miss Cameron, Albina Hillson and Mollie Curran. Miss Jones and MrButler played a piano duet. Mrs Gibson won applause by her singing of "The Splendour of the titans." Miss Laurvig and Mr Powell were recalieu for their duet "Anchored." in response they gave another duet "My Littk* Green Home in the West." Molly Curran, Eileen Butler and Fro.h* Butler, Winnie Tilling and Mavis Biiderbeok dance a sailor's hornpipe anu the concluding items were a patriotic song and "Good-night"' - and "Farewell by tbe party." . Mrs Butler and Miss Laurvig are to be congratulated on the success of tinconcert which should aiso serve to stimulate their pupils and encourage them to greater efforts. CONFIRMATION (SERVICE. On Thursday evening last the lit. R«v. Dr Sprott administered the rite of confirmation to nine candidates (three men and six young women) at the Ven Bede's Church. The bishop was assisted by "the vioar, the Rev. 0. Palmer and delivered a most impressive address to tlie candidates, pointout the serious nature ot the obligation they were taking upon themselves and the need for availing themselves of all possible means of grace, especially Holy Communion to enable them to fulfil their obligations.
