LEVIN. FHIDAY; NOVELUBM 12, 1915. UALLIPOLI DAY. A Christmas Shilling Gilt to the troops, at .Samoa aud the Dardanelles (incl'it»ivu of tlio troops ot our Allies) is now organized by tlio Amateur sports Bodies oi .New Zealand. Ftill details are set out- in a circuf&r' letter that lias been forwarded to the Mayoress o! every borough in the dominion, I'rom the secretary to the movement (Air H. Anion) 'Hie Chronicle has received a. copy of the letter, which wo njprinb for public information. it runs:—"A movement has been organized in \\ ollington by the Combined Amateur Sports Bodies to provide a Christmas gift oi tobacco aud sweets to every soldier of the Allies 011 Gallipoii and at Samoa. Arrangements have been made with reputable English iiniis to send out the gifts direct to Gallipoii in hermetically .sealed tine, embossed with suitable greetings. Delivery will bo guaranteed. Each box will contain sufficient tobacco to make 120 cigarettes; about lour ounces of chocolate aud barley sugar will be included. It ought to be emphasised that under the arrangements made with Home manufacturers the very best value is obtained for the money. On? ' hundred and twenty cigarettes and four ounces of sweets is, as anyone can see, a very good shilling's worth. One of these gifts is to be made to each soldier of the Allies—English, I'Yoneli, Indians, Australians, as well as iNew Zeaila As the Imperial and French troops receive much smaller pay and fewer gifts than our men it is a gracious andl friendly act • 011 our part to let them know that this corner of the Empire in thinking of them. Al the present time many energetic committees are collecting shillings on behalf of our fund in the city and suburbs of Wellington and numerous other places throughout the dominion. At a meeting of ladies convened by th" mayoress, it was decided to mailfe a Special effort 011 the 90th ins£., and to call that day "Gallipoii Day." It is hoped 1)y myalls of the Bale of buttonholes, badges, flowers ami vegetables, by lorry concert parties in the streets., and a big program oi spectacular events, such as physical drill displays, fancy . dress ctiinipetiltions, blindfold boxing,> hat trimming, and hair-dress-ing competitions by returned wound--ed soldiers, etc., to raise a large sum oi money. My committee would be glad if you would convene a meeting of ladies and representatives of sports bodies to organize a "Gallipoii Day" in your city. My committee recognizes how much the wofiien of New Zealand have done and the number of patriotic organizations there are at work at the 'present time, but it confident that if 3xlll take up this proposal you will be surprised at the number of shillings you will 'be able to collect. At the present time my committee has £600 in hand, and this without any special effort. It does not anticipate any difficulty in obtaining £2500—Wellington's quota. Her Excellency the Countess of Liverpool ifi the patroness of the fund."
