Levin S. M. Court
At the Levin S.M. Court yesterday .morning before Mr J. W. l'oynton, S.M., Mr Dineou, truant officer proceeded against several parents for failing to send their children to school. Grace .Royal, of O'iiaii, was fined _10s and costs 7s. John Bolstad, of Tokoniaru, wat; fined 2s. Henry Gray was fined 10$ ivith. 7s costs. Joseph S. Watson, George Graham, Roderick Walton, .Ernest Heath, Michael Holland, William L\ Dale, Alexander Ambler, senior cadets, and V. vdchrainka, a Territorial, were charged with failing to attend drill. In tile case against Graham (who came from l''eilding to answer the charge), the defendant gave evidence that pince leaving Levin lie had attended drill at Awahuri. He was convicted and discharged. Wajton uaine from A\oodville to answer the charge, and gave evidence that h© had notified Lieutenant Vincent of bis departure irom Levin last June. Since then he had attended drill in Wellington and at Woodviile. lie was convicted and discharged. Holland pleaded not guilty. He said that he was too lar aAvay'to attend drill. He was working about three and a half miles out. Sergt-Major Daniels said that" the distance allowed by laiv was an hour's ride or a four miles walk. He was fined 20s, costs 7s. in default 14 days military detention. Bale pleaded not guilty. He had neglected drill, but now was attending He was fined 20s, costs 7s, or 14 dsjfl' military detention. He was given a month to pay the fine. Ambler, who failed to appear, was liner £2, coats 7s. in default 21 days military detention. Heath, made no .personal answer to the charge, but a letter from his parflits Btated that he now was attending drill at Wellington. He was convicted and discharged. Watson also failed to appeair and put in a letter that he had to go 'away to work. He would attend drill in future. He was convicted and discharged.. V. Schramka failed to appear and the police gave an unfavourable report of him. He had not attended drill at any time. Sergt-Major Daniels said that tho eadeta had complained bitterly ,of lioVm •who never attended drill and jeered at those who did. He was informed Schramka was' one of thos that took part in the jeering. He atked for a salutary penalty. Mr Poynton remarked that he had no .time for shirkers and fined Schramka. £5 with 7s in default 28 days military detention.
