Iron! iiis Lxeellency the Governor, Lord Liveipuol : — 1 have received a telegram from tho Maiquib ol Lansdoniio informing me that in view of tho growing demand both in J-'rance and the Aear East, it s necessary to make a general appeal for assistance in money for itod Cross purposes, and he has asked whether tliis Dominion will assist in company with all the other dependencies ol tho Crown, in organising street and other col lectio ii<s throughout Mow Zealand on October 21st. The money received from this general appeal will be devoted entirely to relieving our sick and •wounded soldiers and sailors from Homo and overseas at the vurious seats of war. Lord Lansdowne goes on to .say:--"From all parts of the King's dominions wo have already received generous assistance in our -work, but with tho increase <jf British and overseas torces ai the iront tiiere is a correspoiuiiug increase m our oxpenuiuire, and we shali be' truly griiteiui to you ii you will help ua by organising an uppu.il lor tho object which 1 nave named. "Their AAajesties tlio King and yueon, and Her Majesty Queen Alexandria are giving u« their gracious patronage, and 1 trust that you will also be able to see your way clear to help us. ,, 1 accordingly consulted my Ministers on the question and they concurred n the proposal to lay this telegram before the people of these islands. While gladly according the patronage support asked lor by Lord Lansdowne, 1 desire to make it clear that this ippeal emanates rrom the United Kingdom. No goods in kind arc called for. All contributions shiould be Rent to the Under-Secretary lor Internal Affairs. Wellington, and 1 will then, according to tn*e instructions, give directions for tTie amounts to be forwarded to St< John's G-ate. London, while at the same time informing His Mnjesty tho King.
