1 The ordinary monthly meeting of the Horowhenua County Council was held in the Borough Council Cham hers on Saturday. There were present: Councillors G. Watson (chairman) G. N. Stephenson, G. P. Cately, G. M'nn'k, F. Better, .T. Kebbell, g. A. Broadbelt. and 11. Freeman. Leave of absence was granted to Councillor Venn owing to indisposition, and the council expressed its MTapaihv with him and wished him a speedy' recovery. The council grnntel permission to the Board of Agriculture for children in collect, grass seeds on the roadsides and waste places within the County providing the j>, cd* are sold for the benefit of the Wounded Sohiumii Kuiul. St. George against paying rates on a church property (used .solely as a place of Avorship) it was oxplainel that there was some mistake, as the council nad no power to levy rates on church properly used for worship. Councillor Cately referrel to enti 'o animals wandering en the county road.v (Tin- question cropped up owing to a complaint received from J. Page that bulls were wandering on a road at Kopntaroa). He said that they were a danger to people on the roads and settlers alongside the road. The inspector should attend to the matter, and prosecute those who allowed these animals j to wander. Councillor Ivehbell said that -dock always were wandering on the road* u the County, and he itatl got tired •>' j complaining about the matter. The trouble in regard to prosecuting was that the ranger was paid by the driving fees and if he prosecuted he lost these fees. The rangers for To Horn and Otaki ridings were requested to supply the council with a 'monthly statement ol the number of head of stock impounded. The action of Councillor Catley in giving Mr Mitchell permission to erect a gate on the road loading to his property at Te Horn was confirmed.' The owners of the land benefited by the drains from the swamps in Monckton and Addington's subdivision, to tlie Maligaiono stream, are to at once clean out tbo portions of the drains that about on tbeir lands, -within fourteen days from the receipt ot the notice that •will be served on them. Failure to do as requested will render the land owners to prosecution, or the. work being done by the council at their expense. Oji the motion of Councillor Cately seconded by Councillor Monk applications are to be called for the position of ctirfacoiuai! for the To Horo riding. Applications must be in by next meeting of the council. A deputation consisting of Messrs Griffiths ano! Ivingdon waited on the council and a<sked tor assistance in putting in groins to protect their property in tlie Otaki Gorge from the erosion of the Otaki river. in doing so the deputation pointed out that the council would be protecting its own road in doing the work. Tlie council either could strike a special maintenance rate to carry out the work, or else, if the council supplied the necessary netting for the groins, the settlers 'would do the ■work themselves to the satisfaction of the council.
Tho request for assistance was granted, the council to supply tlie wire netting necessary. Councillor Kcbboil moved that Onice. IRoera bo informed that if ho does not comply wit.li the instructions of the engireer regarding access to 1m sections on the Muhunoa west road, that ho -will lie prosecuted for making the outrange •without leave from the county council. Councillor Hotter seconded the motion and it irns carried. On tho motion of Councillor Kobboll and Councillor Freeman tho clerk was instructed to ohtain a copy of nil the regulations made In , order-in-eoimcil or oth'enrisc under the TJairv Act.
