There was a sensational encounter between the police and three burglars at the Trades Hall resulting in Constable McGratli being shot dead ami two intruders, John JacKson and Kit-h----ard Buckley were wounded. The constable -was on duty at the Trades Hall and had his suspicions aroused by a blight tonnd of sawing. He sent for the assistance of a posse of police, who jsiirroiiuded the building, and on enter"ing it they were met by a volley of revolver shots, to which they replied. When tlie lights were turned on two men were seen running along the corridor. McGrath hurried along a passage where he was subsequently found in a dying condition. The two burglars then rushed for the door amid a rapid exchange of shots between them and the police. Jackson, who was wounded in the thigh and had a broken ankle, -was secured in the building. Buckley was seriously wounded in the neck and collapsed after reaching the yard. In the meantime the third burglar (Ward) was caught while attempting to escape through a "window.
