Horowhenua County Clerkship.
i... I, i■■ q. ' ...»■ ■ -• (From tho Ofcaki Mail.) It would seem thai the last has mt yet been heard of the appointment of a el oil-. to the Horowhenua County Council. At last meeting, it will be remembered, the council sprang a sur prise on the ratepayers by appointing a permanent clerk—at a very considerably increased salary, with a promise ot a further rise in two years' time— without publicly calling for applications for the office. it is understood that the gentleman appointed at that meeting has decided not" to take up duties; consequently ths council is now advertising for fresh applications for
the position. It is noteworthy that tho advertisement has appearod in tho Wellington papers, but, up to the prelington pnpor.sl23To() i 123 fSO I■"> sent, has not been inserted in either the Horowhenua Chronicle or Otaki Mail. All previous advertisements in connection with suclf positions have always appeared in the district .papers, ami we arc therefore forced to the conclusion that the local papers have been purposely passed over as a punishment for their temerity in censuring the council lor the unbusinesslike and unprecedented appointment made by the council at its last meeting. We feel convinced that tho great hulk ' '• the ratepayers will resent such miserlaTjle tactics by the council, or whoever is responsible, and wo can assure the councillors that no amount of boycotting will prevent our denouncing any actions of the Council, which we deem inimical to the best interests of the ratepayers.
