Tho insured losses by lire throughout New Zealand totalled nearly half a million pounds sterling during 1914. This sum is considerably in advance of the amount lost by fire in 1913. A note in the .annual report ol the Inspector of Fire Brigades states that soms portion of tho increased loss shown under the heading of "Losses throughout th*> Fire Districts" must, oi course, bo set down as duo to the greater number of fires that occurred, but a> factor in the matter is the largo number of borh' permanent and volunteer firemen that have enlisted in the Expeditionary Forces, and the fire-fighting efficiency, particularly of the country brigades, has suffered in consequence, more so in that a large majority of those enlisted consist of tho more energetic and experienced firemen of their respective brigades. There has been considerable comment ill recent yeans respecting the importation of balter from .New Zealand and Australia into Canada. it would appear, however, that the tables are being turned, as the Dominion Dairy Commissioner has just been advised that tho steamer "Ma'kuri," which sail ed for New Zealand and Australia ou the 7Hi instant, carried approximately 4,000 boxes of butter trom creameries in tile Prairie Provinces, and that orders have been received by Vancouver merchants for a .further shipment of (3,000 "boxes by the next .steamer. It seems quite likely that in the very near future the output of butter from tlio creameries in Alberta. Saskatchewan, :ilid Manitoba, will be more than sufficient to supply all western demands, and provide a very substantial surplus for export.
