New I'or.k. iSept. 22 Workmen who were exploding dynamiie to remove rocks from a city suu■way construction caused the pavements and siilewalks to cave in, burying a street car with, scores ol wonion mid men who were proceeding to work. Heavy Hows of water and gas threatened to drown or suffocate the imprisoned passengers, but the police and firemen ontored the hole and rescued •seventy persons, badly injured, from the party buried car. Seven already are dead. SHIP ON FIRE. The Tuscania has arrived with 40U survivors from the Greek steamer Athenic, which was abandoned, on lire, at sea. The crew fought the lire for thirty-six hours, assisted by some of the passengers. "5.0.5." calle brought the Tuscania which sent a fire-fighting party aboard. Mr Hunter replied that f he meat companies at present could defy any Government and the Act woe eseenally a war measure.
