Levin and District Patriotic Society
A well attended ami representative meeting ol citizens. ladies and men, Has held last evening in the JJorough Council Chambers, for tlie purpose of forming a properly constituted and organised branch ot the patriotic society. -\lr W. Hughes, as chairman of the late Queen Carnival movement, in Levin, occupied the chair in the early stages of the meeting. Jn explaining the objects of the proposed society, lie mentioned the need for a properlyconstitued 1 organisation 'which 'would bo recognised as the controlling body, and which would foster the patriotic movement in Levin. splendid work was already being done by the ladies who were continually raising money for tho various funds in existence, and were also providing many necessaries in the clothing lino lor the "buys" at tho trout. With a bigger organization tho work could be lurther extended, and the ladies coufd stifl continue their good work. The apparent need was also mentioned for some proper society which would see that the public war a not exploited umler tho guise of the "Wounded Soldiers' Fund" by movements and entertainment, etc., which yielded nothing for the fund, and Uo account of the moneys collected. After declaring the business of tho late Queen Carnival to be completed, Mr Hughes formally vacated the chair, Mr 13. 11. Gardener was then formally elected to the position of chairman, and the iollowmg executive was elected : Messrs W. Hughes, i ( . O. Smith. 1). S. Mackenzie, Mesdames 13. 11. Gardener and A. )V. Rich tor, and iho president, treasurer, secretary, and as-sistant-secretary. It was decided that a membership charge of Is be mado, and children Oil, and that everyone be asked to show their practical sympathy by joining. Membership cards or badges will be issued to members. Mr 0. S. Iveedwell was elected secretary. and Mrs Goldsmith assistant-sec-retary with Mr Cjol'Lsiiuih as treasurer. The Mayor of Levin fur the time being will be president. The executive hatt the power to appoint, ;my sub-coni-mittes that may bo iouinl necessary to carry on any pan'oiik.r branch of the society's work. i'Jio present Levin Ladies' Committee >vn-; 'appointod a committee under the new society to deal -with the work it is at present carrying on, and with power to disposo of the funds that it has in hand.
