An interesting hybrid, a cross between an anemone and a cactus dahlia, lias been grown by .Mr J. Barnett, in his nursery in Oanibridge-street. The centres of the flowers have the dark blue of the anemone, while the surrounding floral leaves have the characteristics the cactus dahlia. The anemone apparently nvas pollinated from a cactus dahlia that was growing alongside of it. Mr D. Smart, manager of the Horowhenua Fruitgrowers' Association's depot, reports that there 'was a good ,Mini ry for seed potatoes during the week, and seven tons, comprised of Northern Star, Gamekeeper, and Dalmeny, were sold at prices ranging from £5 to £G 10s per ton. A special train from Auckland Avith the Maori reinforcements, passed through Lov in to Wellington, a bout S.J3O this morning.
TJIO Wellington Education Board invites tenders for painting and repair work to aiakerua, Waikanae and Reikiorangi public schools; also for the making of additions to Te Horo public schools. Plans and specifications may be seen at the Chronicle Office, Levin, and Mail office, Otaki.
A meeting of members of the latelycompleted first-aid class will be held 011 Monday, 20th September, in Miss Gardner's studio. The Levin Fire Brigade's annual "social" and dance held last night in the Druids' Hall was most successful. There was a good attendance, and the arrangements made for the entertainment of visitors was perfect. Mr Mason played the necessary music in first-class stylo, and was assisted with-extras by Miss Pink, and Messrs Walker and <7. Rose. The captain of the Fire Brigade, Mr J. McTaggart, in a brief speech, returned thanks to those present; for their patronage, and to all who had assisted them in <anv way. Ho considered that there would be a credit balance to hand over to the Wounded Soldiers' Fund. fie mentioned that out of about 1500 firemen in NW Zealand 300 had volunteered for. the front and he thought that they were well represented. A splendid supper was provided by a committee of ladies, comprised of those connected with the fire brigade, and some from outside. Mr J. F'ollas acfed as M.O.
At last the proposed cu-operative dairying company ioi* Manakau, ~;u much talked-of, has become an accomplished fact. The company lias been duly formed, ami the preliminaries completed. Arrangements have been made for the purchase of the X. Z. Farmers' Dairy Dili oil cheese factory at Manakau, 'which has been taken over as from September list. The promoters of the company are: Messrs R Mason (chairman;, A. Winter, F. Burnell. T. Clifford, i'\ W. llobinson, I. Nicholson, Scboles and Hammond. Mr liciidall, of Palmerston North, Inns been appointed permanent .secretary of Mii> company. The nowly-forined company is undoubtedly a stop in the right direction. and deserves the hearty support of the settlers. The farmers should oo able to carry 011 most satisfactorily, and they will havo the satisfaction of knowing that every penny earned •will go into their own pockets.
