f At Thursday's sitting or the tS.M. Court, before Mr J. W. Poynton; S.M.. Cecil Wilson was charged by tho police with the theft, on the 18th August, of a calf valued 'at £1, the property of James Rose. Mr. C. iilenkhorn appeared for tlie accused, who entered a plea ot guilty, and elected to be dealt ■with summarily. Constable Hagrie detailed the eiicumstances of the case. It appeared that the calf had .strayed into a mob oi cattle that was being taken to the saleyards by a drover. There the c-alf was handed over to the deputy ranger (accused), to impound, by tho auctioneers, .but instead of impounding the calf he bold it for 7s (id to a dealer who had met him on the road. it vac; said that Wilson was under" tlie influence of drink at the time and Hie constable believed that to be the case. It was tlio linst time he had been -n trouble. Mr Jilenkhorn told the bench that Wilson was under the influence oi hqnor at the time, otherwise Jie would not have sold for 7s Gd a calf valued at restitution had been made. Wilson was an old resident and was jrrcspected member of the community'. •Mr Poynton, in passing judgmeut. said that Wilsun would have to lose his job. He ordered Wilson to come up .for sentence when called upon, and to abstain froin liquor for twelve months., and to pay Court' cost* and witnesses' expenses amounting to 35. Mr J. Dmeen, truant officer, prosecuted several parents for failing to send their children to school. The first defendant, John Hayes, was fined 10s and 7s costs. Heremia, a Maori, on a similar charge fas lined 10s and Us u'd costs. .Nelson I'ora.witi, another Maori, was mulcted similarly for a like offence. Patuaka also was fined 10w on each ot two charges with 2s O'cl translation costs in each case. John Kankin was lined 10s and ordered to pay 7s cost. John Kuiti. a Maori, pleaded guilty, and was lined 2s and ordered to pay costs amounting to 9s (Jd., George McEwan. on two charges, was lined 10s on each with costs 7s. A case that occupied some little time was that of Wilson v. liesoltine, a <:laim for fencing. Mr Jilenkhorn appeared for plaintiff and Mr Park for defendant. Plaintiff and defendant hold adjoining sections on the 'Heatherlea Settlement. The defendant admitted the claim for fencing but put in a eoitnter-cla-iin for grazing. In the counter-claim lieseltine gave evidence that it was understood between them that he was to let Wilson's stock graze on his (Heseltine's) section, as payment for the fence, as at the time he had no stock.

Mr Poynton said that he did not know which of the two was telling the truth; each told a plausible (story. Judgment by consent was entered lor Wilson on the claim for leiicing, L'i js, costs os. On the counter-claim lieseltine was non-suited and ordered to pay costs amounting to £1 Is.

Gardiner did not appear and was ordered to pay the amount forthwith in default four days' imprisonment in Wellington gaol. 'Warrant to be suspended n the amount due be paid in instalments of £2 per month, the first instalment to be paid before October 9th.
