GAS .UANAGEIVS REPORT,
J'or the month ending August lio'th, the following report was submitted by the manager of the ga.s department: -
During tiie month matters in connection with the undertaking have .shown a steady increase as compared with the corresponding period ot last year. There has not been much doing during the month in the nature oi extensions, mosi; of tho time being devoted to maintenance, etc. The manufacturing plant continues to give satisfactory results, and speaking generally, its keeping in good order. The matter of seriously considering the renewal of the retorts appeals lo be tiie only thing that requires attention. Tills lias Leen dealt with fully in my recent report put before the lighting committee. The painting ol tiie showroom and cottage appears to be a, necessity, and 1 would recommend that the work be done. 1 have mentioned to members of the lighting committee- the advantage and convenience ol a> small room lor the stoker tu change and wash himself and would like to see something done in this direction when funds are available.
Councillor JJlenkhom, chairman of the lighting committee,, said that the manager had recommended to them that the advice ol Air blackmail, of Aiastertun gaoworks, uo obtained in connection with the renewal of the settings of the retorts. The retorts had lasted longer than usual-—a period of «ix yearcs instead of five. It showed thai the work had been done wdL in the hist place and had received lair usage in the meantime. The brickwork under the rotorU would require an expel t examination. The materials would require lo be imported and they would need to move in the matter now. They had a fair amount of material on hand at present and an expert would be able to advise how much they would require. lie favoured the room lor the use of the .stoker, for changing and washing. .Regarding the buildings they looked very dingy, and he considered that they should be painted. ft was economy to keep the 'buildings painted. Councillor .Robertson endorsed what Councillor Blenkhorn said in regard to the renewals. He was strongly of opinion that a change room and bathroom for the (stoker should be erected. Councillor Blenkhorn moved that the gas manager's request lor Mr .Black-m-an to visit the works, and advise on I the retorts be acceded to;, that tenders lie called for painting the ga.s manager's house and show-room, and that tenders be called lor erecting a change and bath-room for the stoker. Councillor Koborteon seconded the
motion. Tho Mayor said that the retorts had done wonderfully well to last, so long, and showed the careful handling they had received from the stoker. They would have a fairly easy year this year in regard to extensions and they could face the extra expenditure. He thought they were right in seeking the advice of Mr Blackman. It would not he fair to put the responsibility on the gas manager.- He also favoured a change and bath-room for the stoker. Tho motion was carried.
