LAYING DOWN A LAWN
When it is desired to form a la.vn, the ground should be trenched aa directed for the vegetable garden any time during the autumn. If the plot can be prepared in March, a season n.ay be gained by eowjiig the grass seed during that mouth; the surface must bo thoroughly pulverised and trodden down firmly. The following is a good mixture, if procurable:— Crested Dog-tail, 21b"g; Kestuca tenu-i----foiia, -ilbs; Festuca durusciiia, 21bs; Loliuui tciiuii'olia porunue, 201bs; White clover ,21hs; Trifolium iiiiiur, Slbs; Poa Nemoralis mid SempcrvirpMs libs of each. Thi-, mixture ivill uflice for half an acre, and will form a very good lawn, and if kept, ciiL dose answers most soils. Special mixtures for laying flown lawns may also he nad from any seedsman. iSome of jtir native poas and otlier grassos wo.ild answoi , admirably tor lawn purposes. II the ground is of a retentive nat.ire, sowing the s-."jilk sliould he deferred til) August. Commence lo cut as .soon as the machine will act. Some kofer the scythe for the first time oi cutting. Roll previous to mowing; this will save the knives ot the mow jr.
