LAYING DOWN A LAWN
When it is desired to form a la.vu, the ground should be trenched aa directed for the vegetable garden any time during the autumn. If the plot can bo prepared in March,/a season may be gained by (sowing the j;ni.ss seed during that month; the surface must ho thoroughly pulverised .ind trodden down firmly. The following is a good mixture, it procurable:— Crested Dog-tail, 21b"s; l'cstuca tenuifoiia, -libs; Festuca duruscula, 21bs; Lolium fcnuifolia pcrenne, 20lbs; White- clover .21bs; Trifoiium minor, 81bs; Foa Nemoralis and Senipeivirens 4lbs of each. This mixture will 'uftice lor half an acre, and will form a very good lawn, and if kept cut close answers most soilts. .Special mixtures for laying down lawns may also be nad from any seedsman. .Some of -mr native poas and other grasses would answer admirably tor lawn purposes. Tf the ground is of a retentive nature, sowing the scute should be deferred till August. Commence to cut as soon as the machine will act. Some orefer the scythe for the first time of cutting. Roll previous to mowing; this will save the knives ot tho mower.
