in die present days a great deal ul' impoi lance attache* to tlie propped* ol tlic wheat ciupi oi the world, and ■wo ioel sure tliat a summary of tlie positions in various countries will be welcome information to our readers, iu the June issue oi the international JJullotin ol Agricultural and Commercial to .which we subscribe, we note that conditions are fairly good to butter. In Jiugland and Wales—Wheat i* generally in a healthy and vigorous condition. Uarley und oats are somewhat backward, the cold nights and dry weather having retarded their grutvth. All crops would be benelit'od by wanner weather and more rain. Iho weather in (Scotland during May was generally dry and bright, but except in the iirst week it was unseasonable cold, ;\vitli a good deal of frost at night. Conditions wore very favourable to tho cultivation oi the laud but were adverse , to the growth ol young cereals wihich, however, are quite healthy though rather late. In Ireland the weather throughout May was cold ior tne season, and parching easterly winds prevailed. Cereals uiadq little growth 'through want of gonial heat, and rain at the beginning ol June gave much reliei to a;l crops, which are looking well as a rule but are backward; they are likely, however, to come on lust .low. The month oi May in I , ranee was mild, and irotst was absent. Tne lateness in growth observed at the end of April in consequence oi the iairly low temperature has been mostly made up. Urowth ol wheat and rye is at present very active, and except iu a low sinali areas overrun by weedy the yield gives promise oi being excellent. (Jats and barley brairded under excellent conditions. In general autumn cereals are in better order than spring cereals, which require more lrequeuo rams. Canada reports backward conditions. In the maritime provinces the month oi May was cold and wet, and delayed sowing. in Quebec and Ontario cold winds prevailed. Frost iollowiug on the very warm tempera turo <A April hindered growth of sowings and caused (slight damage in tdie A T orth West. Jn spite of damngo by . night frosts, the general condition of cereal crops, and of the weather at present, is favourable. On account of the mild winter and good climatic conditions during March and April, rthe acres of autumn sowings destroyed ure much smaller than iifciiaJ. Austria and Germany report favourable conditions, but Japan's climate has been unfavourable. Strong winds have caused a set-back to the wheat crops in Egypt, but the crop is above the average in most provinces. •
BOY AND GIKL SOOUTti
An address in support of tJio J3oy Bcout movement was delivered at Levin public school yesterday afternoon by Mr Hurley, of Wellington. This admirable organization,' probably administered," does a great deal to instil principles of honor in the boys of its community, besides teaching them habits of obrservanco and causing Elfem to bo resourceful in energencies. The chief need for ensuring success is an efficient scoutmaster. Two are needed for Levin and district. Mr Hurley, the organiser, will be an Levin throughout the present week, and may be seen at the Hotel Aroadia, wihere he will be pleased to meet anyone interested in the movement and to discuss with them the appointment of suitable men to the post of scoutmasters. Later on a visit will be paid to Levin by Colonel Cosßgrove, who is > espeoially interested. 1 s> ir«?Af{ v- <.. - A ju -* ~"»~ -"gar' f -*'-
